Snowy Plover Habitat Stewards
Curious about the Western Snowy Plovers at Ocean Beach? Want to learn more about the plovers and how you can help protect their habitat?
Join us to learn about the Snowy Plover Habitat Stewards program.
The goal of this program is to educate visitors and the community about Western Snowy Plovers and other wildlife at Ocean Beach and how to enjoy the area while minimizing disturbances to wildlife and habitat. We'll set up a spotting scope for folks to view the Snowy Plovers at a safe distance and have a field guide on hand with more information.
Volunteers are also welcome to bring supplies to remove trash from the area. If you would like to do so, we recommend bringing a bucket, gloves and a trash picker if desired.
We recommend all volunteers bring the following:
Filled water bottle (for hydration); Java Beach cafe, near our meeting spot, offers complimentary water
Sun protection (hat/sunscreen)
Jacket/layers (the weather can change quickly, dress in layers)
NPS volunteer gear (if you have it)
Meet at the Judah street entrance to Ocean Beach (map link) at 10 am.
The plan is to work our way down the beach from Judah to Lawton, setting up the spotting scope once we locate the Snowy Plovers. We'll also set up our A-frame sign with program information and chat with interested passersby. Then we'll then turn back and walk to stairwell 28, where we'll combine the contents of any buckets into a trash bag and leave for to pick-up. We'll cover ~ 1 mile.
Spots are limited, so please RSVP: https://luma.com/sppa_11-28
Chair Yoga
We will use chairs throughout the class both for seated and standing poses. The chairs give support which can help with balance and stability allowing for increased freedom and expression in the poses. The first part of the class is seated. We then move on to standing poses with the chairs. Poses can be modified for those individuals with limited ability to stand for lengths of time. Come give it a try!
Part of our Sundays at the Beach series: every 1st Sunday at 2pm on the Great Highway at Irving.

Moonlit Sunset Dunes Bird & Nature Field Trip
Join us to explore Sunset Dunes Park by moonlight! Friends of Sunset Dunes will host a happy hour at 6:30 pm at the Noriega gathering spot at Sunset Dunes and then we’ll start off on our adventure at 7 pm. A full moon will illuminate our stroll as we listen for creatures of the night and hopefully hear (or even see) a Barn Owl and/or Great Horned Owl, hunting along the park for rodents. We’ll attune our senses for listening to the night soundscape and are excited to explore and discover the nighttime activity of wildlife at SF’s newest park by the ocean.
Accessibility: Most of our route will be on the paved roadway but we may explore the beach area, so expect some sandy, uneven paths. We will be using the full moon and the street lights/city skyglow for illumination. Restrooms are located at the Taraval and Judah Ave entrances to the park. We expect to travel 1.5 to 2 mi round trip and will conclude the tour by 9 pm.
Space is limited so make sure you RSVP at https://luma.com/sdfullmoonwalk
Facilitators: Matthew Zlatunich, Lydia Bruno, Travis Smith, Mike Anderson, Heather Shane
