Welcome back snowy plovers!
Join us on Saturday, 8/22, between 11 am and 2 pm, to welcome back our local Western Snowy Plovers to Ocean Beach.
Our plovers leave their home every May and June to nest elsewhere but always return to Ocean Beach to live for the majority of the year. The beach area between Lincoln and Sloat is designated the "Snowy Plover Protection Area".
We are partnering with the Park's Conservancy's Roving Ranger program. Look for the Roving Ranger truck parked at the Judah entrance to Ocean Beach at Sunset Dunes Park. We'll have fun family friendly activities like making snowy plovers out of cotton balls and lots of information about our beloved snowy plover neighbors!
We'll also have plover viewing opportunities out on Ocean Beach. Volunteers will be stationed with spotting scopes for folks to view the plovers from a safe distance.
National Park Service biologists will be on hand to answer questions about the plovers and how we can share the beach to protect their habitat.
And look for the Sunset Dunes Park mascot, "Snowy D. Plover" to make an appearance!
We hope to see you there!
